Marie has made this recipe for years as part of her Christmas baking. The squares are succulent and delicious and our family Christmas wouldn’t be the same without them!

Butter Tart Squares Recipe :
- INGREDIENTS:
- 1 cup (8 oz – 240 gm) butter or margarine
- 2/3 cup, packed (4¼ oz – 120 gm) brown sugar
- 2½ cups (10 oz – 280 gm) all purpose white flour
- 4 eggs
- 2 cups, packed (12¾ oz – 360 gm) brown sugar
- 2 tsp (10 ml) flour
- 1 tsp (5 ml) baking powder
- 1/2 tsp (3 ml) salt
- 1/2 cup (4 oz – 120 gm) melted butter
- 2 tsp (10 ml) vanilla extract
- 3 cups (1lb – 450 gm) raisins
- 1 cup (4¼ oz – 122 gm) chopped walnuts
METHOD:
Bottom Layer:
Cut the first three ingredients: butter, brown sugar and flour together until mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
Press into an ungreased 18″x9″ (46cm x 23 cm) baking pan, or 2 smaller pans.
Bake at 350°F or 180°C for 15 minutes.
Top Layer:
Mix eggs and 2 cups brown sugar together, and combine with the remaining ingredients until mixed.
Spread over the baked bottom layer.
Bake at 350°F or 180°C for about 20 minutes until top is crackled and brown.
Allow to cool before cutting into squares.
